During this Year of Faith, Pope Benedict XVI calls on us to re-discover our joy in the priceless treasure made available to us through faith based on a personal encounter with the Risen Christ—the Christ who, as the Catholic Church teaches, forgives all sins and bestows the gift of fullness of life. “Faith,” he tells us, “is a gift that needs to be discovered anew, fostered, and witnessed to. The ‘door of faith’ (Acts 14:27) is always open for us, ushering us into the life of communion with God and offering entry into his Church. It is possible to cross that threshold when the word of God is proclaimed and the heart allows itself to be shaped by transforming grace. To enter through that door is to set out on a journey that lasts a lifetime. It begins with baptism (cf. Rom. 6:4), through which we can address God as Father, and it ends with the passage through death to eternal life, fruit of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, whose will it was, by the gift of the Holy Spirit, to draw those who believe in him into his own glory (cf. Jn. 17:22)” (Porta Fidei, 1).
During this Year of Faith, may all of us experience the joy and beauty of being Christians, that we may become compelling and joyful witnesses of the Risen Christ. We foster our relationship with Christ by persevering in daily prayer (Scripture reading, the rosary, the chaplet of Divine Mercy, the Eucharist); by constantly working on ourselves to overcome sloth and selfishness; by avoiding the slightest sin; by making a frequent sacramental confession so as to remain in a state of sanctifying grace; and by constantly deepening of our religious knowledge through the reading of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Catholic books, and the Catholic press.
Let us pray every day for the gift of a strong, joyous faith and zeal in sharing this faith with others. In this task of the new evangelization, Love One Another Magazine (now published in 16 languages) plays a vital role. We are glad to announce that we have published our first issues in Mandarin Chinese and Portuguese. May this Year of Faith be for all of us a time of deepening our relationship with Christ through prayer, the sacrament of penance, and the Eucharist, and also a time of intense evangelization, in which you, our readers, may avail yourselves of LOA in its numerous language versions. You have only to contact our editorial office and we will send you as many promotional issues as you require. Please help us gain new readers for our magazine throughout the world.
Above all, we ask for your prayers. We ask those who are sick to offer up their sufferings for the conversion of sinners and the evangelization of the world through LOA. Where possible, we ask you to contribute to our publication fund by “adopting” readers in the mission lands. Share your faith by submitting your witness accounts, and these we will publish in our magazine. We invite you to feel jointly responsible for this important tool of evangelization.
Every day the LOA staff prays for each one of you. Before the starting the day, we pray the rosary together. At 3:00 p.m. we say the chaplet of Divine Mercy; and once a week we offer up a Holy Mass for your and our intentions. Our thanks and blessings to you for your prayers and sacrifices.
